Before Gunner was killed, he was enrolled at Mott Community College in the Auto Tech program and was excelling! He was a big car guy that knew everything cars and had plans to open his own repair shop after graduation. He was even on the Dean's list each semester. He made some amazing friends while enrolled there and had fantastic instructors. We wanted to give back to the program in some way in Gunner's honor.
The only thing Gunner didn't like about his program at Mott came when working in the student run auto repair shop. Customers would bring their vehicles in for problems to be diagnosed but wouldn't pay to have the students make the repairs. They didn't get the hands on experience they needed to join the workforce.
We decided we would partner with the Mott Foundation to set up and endowment scholarship in Gunner's name. We didn't want the award to go to one student, we wanted to benefit every student in the auto tech program. We set it up so the funds would be used to buy pre-owned vehicles for the student repair shop to work on to gain the real world skills and experience needed to obtain employment in the auto repair industry.
This was a way we could help honor Gunner while helping all students enrolled in the program that he loved.
